Not a hobby

September 27, 2009 Posted by the writer

DSC01545Lots of people refer to my writing as a ‘hobby’, particularly during one of my ‘Why God why can’t I just make a living doing what I enjoy?’ speeches.

During these moments people usually tell me things like ‘I enjoy mountain biking and I don’t make a living doing that’ or more commonly ‘No one actually likes their job Gretchen, that’s why you do what you like during your spare time, as a hobby.’

Hobbies aren’t supposed to be stressful.

Don’t get me wrong, I love writing, the activity isn’t what stresses me out. It’s not being able to survive using the strongest skill I’ve got. Too bad I don’t play sport as good as I write, maybe I’d be a millionaire by now!
